Library Tips & Tricks

Get Down with Digital

Ebooks aren’t just for grown-ups. Today there are countless apps that offer digital copies of children’s books. Public libraries subscribe to some of the most popular ebook resources.

With a library card you can borrow books from Libby and Sora, Hoopla, Tumblebooks, or Bookflix. It’s possible your library has multiple ebook subscriptions! Each offers different titles and parameters.

When reading with Hoopla, you’re guaranteed no wait. You’ll get the books you want on demand. Like borrowing physical books, there may be a waitlist when you read with Libby. But don’t worry! The app will notify you when it’s ready for you to read.

Book returns are a breeze with all these digital options. You don’t have to worry about due dates when you borrow digital books. When your books are due, they’re automatically returned!

Find out what’s available at your local library by checking their website or talking to a staff member. Remember, you can always request that your library buy an ebook. It’s just like requesting a physical book!

Beyond Just Books

On social media, some libraries have a library of things. Power tools, Kitchen Aide mixers, sewing machines, telescopes may all be available at your local library!

Adults aren’t the only ones getting in on the fun! Your library might host a toy lending library or play boxes. You can check out these featured toys, usually with a thematically-related book or two. Staff cleans and sanitizes them when they’re returned. Often, the library will include labels on the kits. They suggest the perfect age group and family activities.

There’s sure to be fun for the whole family! There’s everything from light-up trucks, instruments, and even bug-catching gear.

Curated Offerings

Book recommendations are one of librarians’ favorite things. To pair the perfect story with a loving reader, they build displays across shelves.

Customized recommendations are on the rise. There are a lot of libraries that let you fill out forms online. Staff turn those requests into curated, one-of-a-kind recommendations for you. Ask your librarian if they have a service like this. If not, they might offer something annual, like a Blind Date with a Book Valentine’s program.

It’s also possible to score book bundles in the children’s section. Library staff will select stories with a theme and bind them for easy check-out. It’s a fun surprise and makes choosing new books a breeze.

Storytime and Other Programming

Of course, your local library is home to numerous children’s programs! There’s something for everyone at the library. They have storytimes, puppet shows, and STEAM activities.

Most library programs are geared toward a specific age group. Find the best fit for your child. Visit your library’s website and check out their events calendar. They may even offer printed versions at check out. Best of all, most public library programs are FREE!
