Salmon School: What Will Happen Next?

We hope that someday Novel Effect will be a platform where anyone can create their own voice-driven storyscapes and share them with the world. So we decided to test that theory with the help of Mrs. Stengel’s First Grade Class at Salish Coast Elementary in Port Townsend, WA. The students took their knowledge of and passion for salmon and wrote an epic story that brings the lifecycle of a salmon to life, by imagining what becoming a salmon might be like and following the adventures of Sam the Salmon in Salmon School.

Our head of content, Eric Goetz, grew up in Port Townsend and went to Salish Coast Elementary as a child, so he jumped at the chance to collaborate with the students on the storyscape for Salmon School. Eric returned home, and while visiting his parents, recorded some creek, ocean, and wildlife sound effects from the real-life settings featured in the story. He then integrated those sounds into Novel Effect’s storyscape, along with music to capture the emotional journey of Sam the Salmon’s life.

Finally, since the story already featured wonderful full-color illustrations by the students, we thought it would be great to also feature the students speaking in the role of Sam the Salmon. We hope you enjoy Salmon School as much as we do!
