Designed by our team of educators to support summer learning and strengthen language skills and reading comprehension through engaging themes, conversation starters, and diverse book activities. Join us to plant a seed that will grow their love of reading this summer!
Week one: ENGAGEMENT
Get Ready to Grow

It’s time to head outdoors now that school is out! Reading throughout the summer helps your child maintain their literacy growth, particularly if you ask them questions about what they are reading to help deepen their comprehension skills. Grab a few books and your Novel Effect app, then find a sunny spot and get ready to grow a great reader!
CULTIVATE CONVERSATION
- What type of books do you like to read?
- What is your favorite place to read?
Week Two: ADVOCACY
Planting Seeds of Change

Understanding differences and fairness begins at a young age. Families can help children grasp complex issues like social justice, the idea that everyone deserves equal opportunities, to better understand the world around them. Using books can be a great springboard for a difficult conversation about a complex topic. These can build a foundation for understanding social justice, preparing kids to help their communities become a better place for all.
CULTIVATE CONVERSATION
- How do you want to help your community?
- Brainstorm ideas/areas in your community that may need help.
- Do you notice anything in common about the places in our community that need help?

Week THREE: Acceptance
Creating Room Flor-ALL

Books build a lifelong love of reading with your child, but they allow them to experience stories as both windows and mirrors, a way to introspectively see themselves and others in stories. Children’s socioemotional development is dependent on their ability to understand others and then develop a greater understanding of themselves! Anti-bias education can happen both in and out of a classroom. Helping children understand anti-bias can help them cultivate an acceptance of those around them, whether they are the same or different.
CULTIVATE CONVERSATION
- We’re all the same, we’re all different! Isn’t that wonderful?
- Consider similarities and differences within your neighborhood – ask your child to find two things that are the same and two that are different from a neighbor.
Week Four: Friendship
Produce-ing Meaningful Connection

Building friendships can sometimes be a challenge, but books help build a bridge to show how to make and keep friends! Modeling behaviors that help sustain friendships is a key part of how families can help their children develop strong socioemotional skills. Kindness is a key part of building relationships!
CULTIVATE CONVERSATION
- What makes a good friend?
- How are your friends unique?

Week FIVE: Self-expression
Harvesting Healthy Feelers

Feelings can be overwhelming, but there are fun ways to teach children about their feelings! Self awareness and naming feelings are ways to give children control of their emotions. Using the books in the Healthy Feelers collection allows children to see feelings in action and ways to react to different situations.
CULTIVATE CONVERSATION
- Tell me about a time you were sad/mad/worried…what made you feel better?
- Share a time you felt worried and what made you feel better.
