Snow & Snowman Activities
Brrrrrr! There’s a chill in the air! There’s no better time to snuggle up with a cozy book than when the temps drop, the wind blows, and winter weather ensues. You may be stuck inside, but look no further for something cool to do. We’ve rounded up a flurry of snowman activities that you and your kids are sure to scarf down.

Snow and Snowman Activities for the Classroom

Making snowmen is a favorite childhood activity that can be hard to bring into the classroom. The best way to share a love of snowmen with your students is through a Novel Effect read-aloud. A few of our favorite snowman titles include Sneezy the Snowman, How to Catch a Snowman, and Snowmen at Night. There is so much sweetness and silliness associated with snowmen in these books!

After reading one of these books, play Snowman Went to Market, fun indoor activity for budding bookworms.

This game starts with a student saying, ‘Snowman went to market and bought an apple.’ The next student then says, ‘Snowman went to market and bought a baseball and an apple.’ Continue around the room, with each student adding an item that begins with the next letter in the alphabet, and repeats back what others have said. It’s a super fun  activity that tests listening and memory skills for all ages.

Snow Day Activities

For all Snow Day lovers, The Snowy Day and The Mitten make up a brrr-fect double feature with Novel Effect. These sweet read-alouds inspire so much fun when it’s too cold to play outside or it’s time to warm up after a snowball fight!

These activities help everyone enjoy snowy weather without getting frostbite:

  • This or That: get kids moving while sharing their favorite winter pastimes. Divide the room into two activities and let kids choose between them. Give each thing its own corner of the room to get your little learners moving. Have them choose between sledding or skiing, skating or snowboarding, building snowmen or snow forts. Students can explain their choices after each round.
  • Snow Phrases: Get your kiddos playing with words! Put your little ones in small groups and give them each a piece of paper. Groups brainstorm as many compound words and two-letter phrases as they can think of that have the word snow in them.
  • Encore: This activity is a favorite among older readers. Kids come up with songs about snow or with the word snow in them. Let each group share a song title. When another group has that song on their list, they say ‘Snowman!’ and check it off. That title cannot be shared again. Keep going around until every group has exhausted their list.
