Take Flight With Izzy Gizmo Activities
Come and invent with Izzy Gizmo! Engage students with over a dozen activities that develop vocabulary, identify story elements, and work through engineering and design. These activities support English Language Arts and STEM skills, so students can:
- participate in a soundscape Scavenger Hunt
- trace vocabulary words.
- illustrate tools.
- match rhyming words.
- write or illustrate the story events.
- illustrate Izzy’s attempts.
- write about the story.
- compare and contrast Izzy and yourself.
- define and illustrate vocabulary words.
- plan a new gizmo!
- research an inventor.
- play engineering games.
- make a three-person machine.
- play guess the word.
- reflect on and respond to discussion questions and writing prompts.
You can use activities to differentiate instruction, give students a choice, or focus on a specific skill.

About the Book and Soundscape
Izzy Gizmo’s inventions are marvelous and magnificent. Except for one thing. They frequently malfunction. In spite of that, Izzy loves to invent. As a result, when she comes across a crow with a broken wing, she helps it fly again.
You’ll hear Izzy try, fail, and try again while reading along with the soundscape. Young engineers will feel the excitement and joy that come with bringing an idea to life with the sounds of Izzy furiously using her tools.
