Just Ask Activities

Just Ask, Justice Sotomayor’s debut picture book, shows readers that everyone can make the world better. She also encourages readers to ask questions when they don’t understand something. With the Just Ask activities, educators and families can continue exploring these themes. Students can celebrate their unique traits and characteristics with the included activities. They also get them thinking about the story’s themes and vocabulary. Using the English Language Arts and Social Emotional Learning activities, students can:

  • color and illustrate flowers.
  • describe themselves with character traits.
  • practice sign language.
  • complete a venn diagram.
  • write about how they are unique.
  • create a new page for the book.
  • write about the author’s purpose.
  • write about different tools people use.
  • explore story vocabulary.
  • research topics from the book.
  • reflect on the story.
  • complete a word search.
  • respond to writing prompts.
  • participate in a swap meet.
  • reflect on and respond to discussion questions and writing prompts.

Activities can be used to differentiate instruction for students, to provide them with a choice, or to focus on a particular skill.

About the Book and Soundscape

Justice Sonia Sotomayor writes about her childhood diabetes diagnosis. Throughout the story, she shows how kids with visible and invisible disabilities are special. To illustrate the themes of community and inclusion, she uses the metaphor of a community garden.

The soundscape designers used music and sound effects to reinforce the idea of being different and special. For every child, you’ll hear a different instrument and style of music to illustrate their unique traits. You’ll also hear how all of these instruments and musical styles fit together, like when the kids work together in the garden. We all have a part to play in making the world a better place, as the soundscape beautifully illustrates.
