About Day of the Dead
The Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, is a vibrant and heartfelt Mexican holiday that celebrates the memory of loved ones who have passed away. It takes place annually on November 1st and 2nd, coinciding with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. Rather than being a somber occasion, the Day of the Dead is a joyous and colorful festival. This is when families and communities honor their deceased relatives.
People create elaborate altars adorned with marigold flowers, candles, photographs, and the departed’s favorite foods and drinks. These ofrendas (offerings) are meant to welcome and nourish spirits as they return to the living world for a brief visit.
Families gather at cemeteries to clean and decorate graves. There’s a sense of celebration with music, dancing, and the iconic sugar skulls and intricately designed calavera (skull) makeup. It’s a beautiful and meaningful tradition that reflects the belief that death is not an end but a continuation of life’s cycle.
